frequent asked questions
What is the difference between probiotics and postbiotics?
Probiotics are live, beneficial bacteria that support our digestive system, found in foods like yogurt, kefir and kimchi.
Postbiotics, on the other hand, are the non-living beneficial end products created by probiotic bacteria when they ferment with prebiotics. Postbiotics are more effective than probiotics and enhance immune function, reduce inflammation, and support gut health.
While probiotics can maintain gut bacteria balance, postbiotics provide the beneficial gut substances directly, meaning more reliable health benefits. Our postbiotics have been created to maximise our customers gut health as efficiently as possible.
How do I take my Root postbiotics?
Adults — as with any new gut health regime, a staggered approach is best and as such we recommend taking 1 capsule a day preferably after a meal for the first 3 days.
Once comfortable with 1 capsule a day, take 2 capsules daily, all at once preferably after a meal. We recommend taking them consistently and sticking to a similar time of day will help you get into a routine.
Probiotics companies will always recommend you take them in the morning and on an empty stomach to limit exposure to digestive enzymes and bile salts. However, Root postbiotics don’t play by the same rules so you can take them when you feel most comfortable (usually after a meal) – but you know your body best.
Do I need to refrigerate my Root Postbiotics?
No.
Postbiotics do not contain live bacteria in the same way that probiotics do. Therefore they do not degrade in the same way probiotics do and do not need to be refrigerated to slow this degradation down.
With Root postbiotics you get exactly the same dose every time and you get exactly what you paid for and is on the label (400mg per dose).
With Probiotics you will never know how much you have taken because the strength of the dose decreases day by day as the bacteria degrade. Unfortunately, a very common marketing trick probiotic companies play is to tell you the amount of bacteria in each dose there were at the point of creation, this is usually nowhere near the amount you end up taking.
Will Postbiotics survive the acidic environment inside the stomach to reach my gut?
Yes. Root postbiotics do not contain live bacteria or any other substances that are destroyed by stomach acid.
Probiotics contain live bacteria and high percentages of these live bacteria are destroyed by stomach acid which means that the body never gets the chance to use them to promote health benefits.
What are the ingredients?
We have used all natural non-GMO ingredients in our formula, designed to be as beneficial to your gut as possible:
Each dose of 2 500mg capsules contains:
Root Postbiotic (400mg) :
Lactobacillus Plantarum ferment, Lactobacillus Salivarius ferment, Lactobacillus Acidophilus ferment, Bifidobacterium Longum subsp. Infantis ferment
Prebiotic Booster (200mg) :
Isomalto-Oligosaccharide (IMO), Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)
Additional ingredients: Corn starch, Vegetarian capsule (Hypromellose)
When will I feel something?
Everyone’s body is different, and the benefits you may ‘feel’ (ease of bloating, more regular bowel movements) are often just the most visceral ones.
Many people feel results in as a little as 24-48 hours due to localised benefits like digestive health support. Other longer term benefits like cardiovascular health and gut immune function may take longer, or you may not notice anything at all. That’s completely normal. As long as you continue your daily intake, those beneficial postbiotics are doing their work inside to enhance your health.

Is Root a prebiotic or a probiotic?
Root is a food supplement which contains inactive fermented probiotic bacteria. It also contains FOS and GOS which are considered to be prebiotics and they have been included in the formulation to encourage any live bacteria already in the gut to thrive.
These inactive bacteria may be considered as postbiotics.
How long should I take Root for?
We want you to use Root for at least 12 weeks as it can take time for dietary changes to take effect. British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines also recommend 12 weeks when trying bacteria-based supplements.
Are Root postbiotics Vegan?

Small amounts of milk are used as part of the fermentation process. However, we are working on a vegan formula which we will hopefully have ready soon.

No. You can order the 3 month gut reset plan with no rolling subscription if you wish to.
